there.

On 23 October 2026, American Express said it would cut about 3,500 jobs, 5% of its global workforce, and book a $336 million restructuring charge. The CEO said the company was preparing for AI. On the same call, it raised its profit forecast.

Amex also runs a centre of excellence in Bengaluru and Gurugram. It is one of 2,117 like it in India. Open the next window.

here.

A global capability centre, or GCC, is an office a foreign company owns in India to do its own work. No outsourcing vendor in the middle. Walmart, Goldman Sachs, Airbus, Lowe's, Target and Nike all run one.

India has 2,117 of them, spread across 3,728 offices. In FY24 the government counted a little over 1,700. Bengaluru alone holds more than 29% of the offices.

people.

Those offices employ 23.6 lakh people. Nasscom counts 59.5 lakh in India's whole tech industry. So roughly 4 in every 10 Indian tech workers now report, in the end, to a company headquartered somewhere else.

Line up 100 Indian tech workers and 40 of them wear the blue badge. In FY24 it was 32. Projections for 2030 add seven more.

money.

In FY19, India's GCCs earned $40.4 billion. By FY26 the estimate is $98.4 billion, already close to the government's 2030 projection of $105 billion.

That revenue is what the centres bill their parent companies. Each bar on the printout is one billion dollars.

meanwhile.

The Indian IT services giants had a different year. TCS, Infosys, HCLTech, Wipro and Tech Mahindra ended FY26 with 7,389 fewer people than they started with. TCS alone laid off 12,000.

Campus hiring is shrinking with it. TCS took in 40,000 to 42,000 freshers a year in FY25 and FY26. Its plan for FY27 is 25,000. Picture placement day with 17 of 42 seats roped off.

the squeeze.

Here is the part nobody puts in the press release. GCC revenue grew about 9.9% a year from FY21 to FY26. Headcount grew about 6.2%. Compound that for five years and each person now carries close to a fifth more revenue than in FY21.

And within FY26, GCC hiring volumes fell 28% from the first half to the second. The offices kept opening. The hiring slowed down inside them.

the canary.

Miners carried canaries because they felt bad air first. In software, the canary is the youngest engineer. Stanford researchers found US software developers aged 22 to 25 lost nearly 20% of their jobs between late 2022 and July 2025.

The same years at TCS: 42,000 freshers became a plan for 25,000. The first rung of the ladder is where the cuts land, in both countries.

the door.

So, laid off there and hired here? Partly. The work did move. 2,117 centres and 23.6 lakh people prove it. What came with it is a smaller door: fewer fresher seats, slower hiring and a bar set by teams in New York or Seattle.

Every one of those seats still gets filled the same way, through a technical interview. That part is our job at Intervue.
